The Golden Hour is about an investigative reporter, Leonora, who is in the Bahamas, 1941 to report on the governor and his wife, but she stumbles onto some secrets about the British royal couple that should've stayed buried. It is a good drama for the summer, mixed with spies, mystery, intrigue, murder and romance.
This novel comes out on July 9th, so only one more week to go! Since it hasn't yet been released I won't be adding spoilers to this review. So everyone is safe to read this until the very end. Yay!!! *sigh of relief*
What did I think of this Historical fiction drama? Overall I enjoyed this book. I liked the dual perspectives, the characters were well developed, the plot was intriguing and I liked how the stories intertwine. That being said, I was also disappointed at the beginning of reading this book. From what I read and got from the synopsis, I thought it was going to have a little more action, and delve more into the world of spies in the WWII era. It gave the reader a brief glimpse into the spy world, and it did have action with the racial tension in the Bahamas at that time, but it was mostly a drama about these two love stories that parallel each other. I did enjoy the story, but I was confused for the first half of the book, because I was waiting for the shit to hit the fan, have people running for their lives, and hiding from Nazis and/ or Nazi sympathizers. I was waiting for something that didn't really ever happen, which was fine and I'm happy with the book we got, but a little part of me was disappointed.
A little warning for anyone who do not like slow paced books, then this is not the book for you. It has a nice pace, for a slow moving love story, but I thought it could've picked up the pace a little more.
I liked Williams descriptions of everything, she is very detail oriented and so it builds the scenes and the characters where you feel like you are there, in the early 1900's and the 1940's. She has a nice writing style, and from what little research I did while reading the book to find the historical accuracies, she's right on the money, which is awesome. This book with the intertwining stories makes me want to read her other books to see what they are about and if they are similar to this one.
Should you pick this one up when it comes out? I would say yes, if you don't mind the slow pace, then this will be a good light summer read for you to check out.
