I would like to begin this review with a huge thank you to Celadon Books, for sending me an Advance Reading Copy of Saint X by: Alexis Schaitkin. I really appreciate this opportunity to help get the word out on this thought provoking novel, which is set to release on February 18, 2020. :)
Now on to the review!!!
The writing style was a little difficult to get into, due to its elegance and slow pace, however after the first fifty or so pages the plot picks up a little more and the slow pace of the beginning makes more sense for this kind of story. This book is an underlying mystery, I'm going to be honest with you, I have never read an underlying mystery and I had no idea what that was until I read it and now underlying mystery makes sense. Its about how one person and one event can affect more people than the ones who are close to it. Eighteen year old Alison is on vacation with her family on a beautiful island, but on the last day of vacation she goes missing and a few days later her body is found. The story goes on to follow her little sister, Claire, grow up and how her sister's death affected her even into adulthood. I loved the multiple character perspectives, both from the main characters as well as the side characters. They were all unique and stood out from each other and added another angle to the story in understanding Alison more. In the end everything tied together and it left me feeling satisfied as I read the last few pages.
A little note one the tone of this story, I know the cover is colorful and summery looking, but it does talk about darker and mature themes and is a pretty heavy book, so please be sure to keep that in mind as you begin to read it. I had to put it down a few times because I wasn't feeling the darker, gut wrenching parts, but that shows how good Schaitkin's writing is, to invoke strong emotions is a good sign when reading a book, and she does that throughout this novel.
That is all I have to say on this book without giving anything away, so I'll leave it at that. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend picking it up when it hits shelves on February 18, 2020.
Until next time.
Happy Reading. :)
