I am a pretty big Nicholas Sparks fan, I have read a few of his books, someday it will be all of them. I eat them up; the romance is the biggest part I love them, but I also love the semi mysteries sprinkled in them, the drama and the few fun and light moments in his books. So, when I read this one I had high expectations. Now I will say this, I did a very bad thing and I had watched the movie when it first came out and I am just now reading the book, so I think that had some influence on how I felt about this novel.
Okay, review time!
I was very disappointed in this book. It is probably because I was already spoiled on the ending from the movie, and other major parts of the story. I was disappointed because the story seemed to drag for the first half of the book, and even after that it was still dragging. I still enjoyed the romance, the tension from Dawson's screwed up family, the tension between Amanda and her mom and her strained marriage, and the ending. I think the movie summed up the story very well for what is in the book, however I do prefer the ending in the book to the one in the movie. I liked how Amanda's son was in the car accident because his father needed a ride home due to how intoxicated he is, instead of drinking and driving himself as portrayed in the movie. I liked how Dawson dies in this version of the story, trying to help save the man he accidentally killed's son from his own family, instead of being senselessly killed in his car for no reason except his family hating him.
I still enjoyed most of the book and gave it a three star rating on Goodreads. If you love Nicholas Sparks then I would recommend this book, but if you are just starting out with his books I would suggest staying away from this one and start with a different one, like the Lucky One, Safe Haven, The Last Song, or even the Notebook, and NEVER watch one of the movies based off his books before reading the book.....I have learned my lesson. lol!
