First, let me tell you all about how much I love Star Wars. I grew up on the OT and the PT, and I was hooked to the movies and the theories everyone had out there about what happened after Return of the Jedi, through Star Wars books. Then in 2015 The Force Awakens comes out, and I was so excited for it. I thought Luke was going to be there for more than just the ending, literal cliff hanger, part. I thought Han and Leia were going to fight together, and introduce us to their children, which I suppose happened. I just wasn't expecting what I saw on the screen when I first watched The Force Awakens, and I will tell you, I left the movie theater disappointed. Who the hell is this Rey chick and what's the deal with Han and Leia's kid being the bad guy??? About a year or two later I watched it again and it wasn't too bad. I had questions about Rey and Kylo's relationship, which led me to the shippers, called Reylos, and I was once again hooked to the story. Now let me be clear on this, I hope Reylo is a thing in the final installment of the current trilogy, I'm not expecting it to be, but I'm hoping it will be. As I've said previously in other posts, I am a sucker for romance, especially ones between the bad guy and the good girl, or vice versa, so Reylo is right up my alley; and if it isn't in the official canon the fan fiction and theories videos are still fun to read and watch. The Reylo's I've been listening to for about three years hope for a redemption of Ben Solo, that is of his own free will, but is also powered by love from Rey. I'll link some of their videos down below, if you are interested in this theory at all.
Moving on to the books. I haven't been into the Star Wars books since I was a kid, reading the adventures of Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin, Han Solo and Princess Leia's children at the time, but after a while I stopped reading all Star Wars books; that is until 2017 when I read The Force Awakens novelization and enjoyed it quite a bit. Then after The Last Jedi I read that novelization as well and enjoyed it. So naturally I wanted to read the books in between the movies and TV shows, from the very beginning, which leads me to this book. According to the list of the books from the New Canon, Dark Disciple is the first book to happen after the Clone Wars TV show. I will admit, I watched the first season of the show and hated it, so going into this novel I knew I would be in for some confusion, but surprisingly enough I wasn't completely in the dark and a few Google searches gave me enough info to keep going, confusion free.
So, what is this novel about? It is a story that follows the character Quinlan Vos, a Jedi Master who goes under cover for the Jedi Council to further their cause in the Clone Wars. The mission they send him on in this novel is to team up with Asajj Ventress (a character form the Clone Wars TV show I secretly liked), to assassinate Count Dooko. It explores their relationship and questions where their loyalties lie, to each other or their masters?
It is a pretty fast paced read, very enjoyable and I recommend it if you are a Star Wars fan like me, or want to get into the Star Wars universe.
Next up are spoilers, so if you haven't read this book, leave now and come back later!!!
Happy Reading! :)
The Review: I normally have a difficult time getting into Star Wars books, but this one was not the case. I was hooked within the first couple of chapters. The characters and action were written so well that I forgot I was reading a book, it read like I was watching a movie. The new to me character, Master Jedi Quinlan Vos was a happy surprise. I'm going to be honest with you, his character worried me a little, simply because I didn't know about him until this book, but he did not disappoint.
I also enjoyed Ventress' character development throughout this book and her redemption at the end. I've seen a few episodes of the Clone Wars TV show with her in them, when she's still Count Dooku's apprentice, so this book filled in a few blanks I had about her character going into this book.
When Vos first meets Ventress and flirts with her during the whole bounty hunter capture scene, was a lot of fun to read. I couldn't help but to smile and laugh at his jokes and her no nonsense attitude towards him. It was SO CUTE!!! The hate to love trope between these two was fun, sad, and thrilling all at the same time! I loved it I loved it I loved it!!!! I loved how they fell in love and all the twists and turns their relationship took throughout the novel, to the very end, was emotional and made things like Vos' turn to the dark side and Ventress' death more impactful. I didn't cry, but my heart hurt for them.
Going back to Ventress' death. In my writing class this last Spring Semester, my professor always stressed how killing off a character is over done and most of the time unnecessary to make the story sad or to drive the plot. Ever since that class, two almost three months ago, I now read books with that in mind. So when Ventress died I immediately thought back to that class, and my professor's voice came into my head head with her rant on death scenes in books. After thinking about it for a bit, I concluded that her death was necessary to complete her redemption arc and to bring Vos out of the darkness and into the light once more.
I don't know what it is about Star Wars and beautiful funeral scenes, but once again I was blown away by yet another funeral scene. It's the last scene, when Vos and Obi Wan takes Ventress' body back to her home planet, and it gave me all the feels and a few chills. It was so beautifully written.
Another part of the book I really enjoyed was having Anakin and Obi-Wan in it, with their usual playful banter and at times comedic relief from the more difficult parts of the story. Golden's portrayal of Mace Windu was spot on to the character I saw in the PT. He is the embodiment of what is wrong with the Jedi Order and the dark path they are going down during the PT. I never liked his character and I was happy when he died in the Revenge of the Sith movie.
Something I found interesting about this book was the scene Christie Golden chose to write into it, which is the scene with Anakin and Padme talking about Vos and Ventress' relationship. It made me think about the reasons she would put it in there, and I thought maybe it was to show the life Vos and Ventress could've had if things were different. Then I also thought perhaps it could be a way to show the connection between A&P's relationship with V&V's, and how V&V's relationship is foreshadowing the path A&P's relationship will go on in the future. Either one could be a possibility for her reasons for putting this cute scene of Anakin and Padme's domestic life into her novel, and I appreciated it very much.
Well that is all I have for this book review, I hope you enjoyed it. If you did, please give this a like, comment down below telling us if you did or did not like this book and leave your reasons why, and share this with all your bookish friends/ family.
I hope you all have a good day.
