Circe Book Review

Writer's picture: Kendra's CornerKendra's Corner

This book is about the Greek goddess and powerful witch, Circe. It is about her life with the gods, and then her life in exile. She experiences love and loss at every turn in this story. I gave this five- stars and I highly recommend this book! SO GOOD!!! :)

On to the spoilery review!!!!

I really loved this story! I'm not a huge fan of Greek Mythology books, love the movies about it though, but with books I either get really bored or confused with all of the characters and who's related to whom. At some point I end up having to draw family trees. lol However, with this book we only really deal with her family and only mention a few non- related characters, so it's easier to follow.

One of the things I enjoyed about this story was Circe's growth from beginning to end. An example of that is with her love interests. With the first love interest she tries to change him, as some young girls do with their first love, into a god so he could be with her. She is successful and finds out he never loved her the way she thought he did. This lesson she learns is important because changing someone the way you want them to be is almost never successful, because people don't change unless they want to change. After she is banished, for changing her first loves lover into a monster out of jealousy, she learns a lot about human men and quickly learns how to defend herself against them. Enter her second love. The lesson she learns with him is allowing someone in and learning to love again. After her love leaves she is pregnant with his child, which I think she wanted since I'm sure as a witch she would know ways to keep from getting pregnant. Through her child she learns a new kind of love, the love of a mother to her child. She goes to great lengths for the love of her son, to keep him from his fate. After he becomes an adult he runs straight for it. Enter he third and final lover, the son of her second lover. This last relationship is the one I liked the most, because he is both strong and loving.

The very last scene in this book is by far my favorite one because it is the most powerful and beautiful one. It is when Circe knows she wants a life with her new love, to have children with him, to love him forever, to grow old with him, and to die when he does. As a goddess and witch, she doesn't age and can't die from old age. She knows this, so after she figures out a potion which could change her into a human she says, "I already have the voice of a mortal, now give me the rest", even now, a month later, I get chills when reading that line. Miller puts so much emotion into those words that chills are all you can get. I was rooting for her because she has always hated the immortals and their ways, and she doesn't like living beyond her friends, so of course this would be the solution to her problems. To have a life with this man, grow old and eventually die. I think there's beauty in that.

This book was so very good and beautiful, the writing style was fantastic, the characters were all well written. I gave this five stars on Goodreads and I recommend this book for anyone and everyone. I'm looking forward to reading her other novel, The Song of Achilles and any other books she writes in the future.

As always, if you liked this then give it a thumbs up, subscribe and I will see you in the next one.

Happy Reading! :)
